Biography

Hon. Robert A. Goering is a judge for the Hamilton County Court of Common Pleas (General Division) in Ohio. He was elected to the bench on November 3, 2020.

Goering received a B.A. from Denison University in 1982. He went on to complete a J.D. at Northern Kentucky University, Salmon P. Chase College of Law in 1986.

Goering was admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court, the United States District Court for the Southern District of Ohio, and the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Kentucky.

Prior to joining the judiciary, Goering was a partner in the law firm of Goering & Goering, LLC, where he practiced alongside his father and brother. He first joined the firm in 1986. In addition to his practice there, he was elected to serve as the Hamilton County Treasurer in 1991.

Goering was also elected president of the Hamilton County Board of Revision, a position he had held since 1992. As such, he was tasked with overseeing thousands of quasi-judicial complaints involving real estate valuations under the Ohio Revised Code. In addition, he served as president of the Hamilton County Budget Commission and the Hamilton County Investment Advisory Committee.

His memberships have included the Cincinnati Bar Association. Goering was co-chair of the Leadership Cincinnati-Government Day and a past member of the Leadership Cincinnati Steering Committee. He was also a graduate of Leadership Cincinnati Class XV (1991 to 1992).

His civic involvement included the Phi Beta Kappa Stepping Stones Center (Board of Directors), the Dan Beard Council, Boy Scouts of America (board member), Kids Helping Kids (former Board President), Knox Nursery School (past president), the Volunteer Lawyers for the Poor, and the Hamilton County Land Reutilization Corporation (County Land Bank) (former Board President).

Goering, who attained the rank of Eagle Scout, was born in Cincinnati and is a graduate of Mariemont High School. He and his wife, Shelley, have three children.

He is registered as a Republican.
