Biography

The Hon. Rienne H. McElyea is a judge for the 18th Judicial District Court of Montana. She was appointed to the bench by former Governor Steve Bullock on December 12, 2016, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Mike Salvagni.

The 18th Judicial District encompasses Gallatin County.

Prior to her appointment, McElyea was a shareholder of Berg, Lilly & Tollefsen, a law firm based in Bozeman. She supplemented her practice with service as a volunteer attorney for the Gallatin Legal Assistance Clinic.

McElyea earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Colorado in 1985. She then completed a J.D. at the University of Colorado Law School in 1989. She is licensed to practice in Colorado (1989), the United States District Court for the District of Colorado (1990), Montana (1992), the United States District Court for the District of Montana (1992), and the United States Court of Appeals for the 10th circuit (1990).

After graduating from law school, McElyea entered into private practice, handling personal injury matters alongside her father, Richard E. Hartman, in Englewood, Colorado. She worked in that capacity until 1991, at which time she relocated to Bozeman, Montana.

A resident of Bozeman, Montana, McElyea has been married to the Hon. Russell McElyea, a judge for the Montana Water Court.
