Biography

Hon. Richard R. Townsend (Ret.) was a judge for the Clay County Court in the Fourth Judicial Circuit of Florida. Townsend joined the bench in 1994. He retired in 2015.


Prior to beginning his judicial career, he was a partner at Kopelousos, Head, Smith, Townsend & Metcalf, a law firm he joined in 1976.


Townsend received a B.A. from Centre College of Kentucky in 1969. He went on to complete a J.D. at Florida State University College of Law in 1972.


He was admitted to practice in Florida (1972), the United States District Court for the Middle District of Florida (1975), and the United States Court of Military Appeals (1972).


Townsend was a faculty member of the Florida Judicial College. He also sat as chair of the Florida Supreme Court Judicial Ethics Advisory Committee.


He was born in Buffalo, New York. A veteran of the United States Army, Townsend was a captain in the Judge Advocate General’s Corps.
