Biography

Hon. Richard L. Hillman is a judge for the Fifty-Fifth District Court of Michigan in Ingham County. He was appointed to the bench by Governor Gretchen Whitmer on April 7, 2020, filling the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Thomas P. Boyd (Ret.).

Prior to his appointment, Hillman was a shareholder at Foster, Swift, Collins & Smith, P.C., where he practiced for over twenty years (1999 to 2020). At the firm, Hillman specialized in municipal law, criminal defense, driver’s license appeals, and landlord/tenant law. In addition to his practice, he served as the city prosecutor for the cities of Fenton and DeWitt.

Hillman was also a former shareholder at McGinty, Jakubiak, Frankland & Hitch, P.C. (1988 to 1999) and was a judicial law clerk with the Thirtieth Circuit Court and a law clerk for Dan Doneth, Attorney at Law and Mueller Law Office.

He received a B.A. in legal theory and English from Michigan State University in 1984. Hillman went on to complete a J.D. at Marquette University Law School in 1987.

He was admitted to practice in Michigan (1987), Wisconsin (1987), the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Wisconsin, the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan, and the United States District Court for the Western District of Michigan.

Hillman has been involved with the East Lansing Knights of Columbus and St. Thomas Aquinas and St. John’s Catholic Parish.

At the time of his appointment, he and his wife, Teresa, resided in Meridian Township.
