Biography

Hon. Richard H. Bartheld is a judge for the Yakima County Superior Court in Washington. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Chris Gregoire in 2012. He filled the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. James Lust (Ret.).

Over the course of his judicial tenure, Bartheld was elected presiding judge of the Yakima County Superior Court in 2021.

At the time of his appointment, Bartheld was a pro tem judge on the family law docket in Yakima County. He also presided as a pro tem judge on the domestic violence and motion dockets and was credited with helping to implement a volunteer pro tem judge program in an effort to reduce case backlogs.

Bartheld received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Washington. He went on to complete a J.D. at Gonzaga University School of Law in 1980.

Bartheld began his legal career as a sole practitioner at his own private practice. He remained in private practice for thirty years, and his practice focused on domestic relations matters and personal injury cases along with a general and complex trial practice. Bartheld also represented small businesses in matters involving formation, personnel issues, liability claims and collections and was an arbitrator in Superior Court cases. At the time of his appointment, Bartheld was a senior partner at the Yakima law firm of Bartheld & Schwartz.
