Judge Raymond Kent Apsley: Professional Background and Legal Expertise

Hon. Raymond Kent Apsley is a judge for the Shelby County Superior Court in Indiana. He was elected to the bench in 2014.

Prior to beginning his judicial career, Apsley was the Prosecuting Attorney for the 16th Judicial District, a position to which he was elected in 2014. Before his election, he was the chief deputy prosecutor with the Shelby County Prosecutor’s Office since 1999.

Over the course of his legal career, Apsley also worked in private practice for fifteen years and was a former public defender.

He received a bachelor’s degree in forensic studies and political science from Indiana University in 1981. Apsley went on to complete a J.D. at Indiana University Maurer School of Law in 1983. He was admitted to practice in Indiana in 1984.

His memberships include the American Judges Association, the Indiana Judges Association, the Indiana Council of the Juvenile and Family Court Judges, and the National Council of the Juvenile and Family Court Judges. Apsley also served on the Board of Managers of the Indiana Judges Association and was appointed by the Chief Justice to chair the Indiana Judicial Conference’s Criminal Law Policy Committee.

He is a co-founder of the Blue River Foundation and was on the Board of Directors of Girls, Inc. and Habitat for Humanity.

Apsley and his wife, Marsha, have two sons. The couple attends St. Vincent DePaul Church.

He is registered as a Republican.
