In Cuba, his father worked as an attorney in Havana, where he represented U.S. businesses, though he was unable to attend law school in the United States. He ultimately found a job teaching Spanish at Concordia College in Moorehead, Minnesota, and later at North Dakota State University in Fargo. He retired as Professor Emeritus of Spanish.
