Biography

The Hon. Rachel E. Tanguay is a judge for the Rockland County Family Court in the Ninth Judicial District of New York. She was elected to the Family Court bench in 2016.


She is a registered Democrat.


Judge Tanguay graduated with her B.A. in writing seminars from John Hopkins University in 1995. She went on to earn a J.D. from the City University of New York School of Law in 1998.


After graduating from law school, Tanguay worked as a law clerk to the Hon. Simeon R. Acoba, Jr., Justice of the Intermediate Court of Appeals in Honolulu, Hawai’i. The following year, she worked briefly as an associate at Harry Tilis, Esq. in New York.


In 2000, Tanguay became a staff attorney with the New York City Administration for Children’s Affairs, where she remained until 2001. It was at that time she began a brief stint as a supervising attorney for the Yonkers Family Court Legal Program with the Pace Women’s Justice Center. During her short time there, she provided free legal assistance to victims of domestic violence.


Tanguay entered into private practice in 2003, first joining the law firm Montalbano, Condon, and Frank, P.C., where she worked as an associate for three years before then going into solo practice at her own law firm in 2006.


She maintained her law practice until 2012 when she became a principal court attorney for the Hon. Sherri Eisenpress with the Rockland County Family Court. Tanguay held that position until her election to the same court in 2016.


She has served as a past president of the Rockland County Women’s Bar Association.
