Judge Qiana Denise Lillard - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Qiana Denise Lillard is a judge for the Third Circuit Court in Michigan. She was appointed to the bench by former Governor Rick Snyder on August 7, 2013.

Prior to her appointment, Lillard was an assistant prosecuting attorney in the Office of the Wayne County Prosecutor, a position to which she was named in 2005. During her tenure there, she held assignments in the Trials Division, specializing in elder abuse, child abuse, domestic violence, and sexual assault cases.

Lillard earned a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Notre Dame in 1998. She then completed a J.D. at Notre Dame Law School in 2001.

After graduating from law school, Lillard began her legal career as a law clerk in the Legal Department of the Detroit Edison Company. She served in that capacity until 2002, at which time she became an associate attorney at the Michigan Basic Property Insurance Association. Then, in 2003, Lillard transferred to the Auto Club Group, where she handled subrogation, uninsured motorist arbitration, first-party PIP and RBI litigation, third-party auto negligence, and homeowner’s tort liability cases.

Her memberships have included the Women Lawyers Association, the Association of Defense Trial Counsel, and the Young Lawyers Section of the State Bar of Michigan. She has also been involved with the Wolverine Bar Association, the Association of Black Judges of Michigan, and the Notre Dame Club of Detroit.

Raised on the southeast side of Detroit by her extended family, Lillard attended the Roeper School. She is a lifelong member of Fort Street Presbyterian Church. When not presiding over legal proceedings, she enjoys kickboxing, watching Notre Dame sports, and listening to Beyonce.
