Judge Peter E. Doyne: Professional Background and Legal Expertise

Hon. Peter E. Doyne (Ret.) was a judge for the Vicinage 2 Superior Court in Bergen County in New Jersey. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Jim Florio in 1993 and reappointed in 2000. Doyne retired on May 1, 2015.

While on the bench, he held assignments in the Civil and General Equity Divisions, where he also served as presiding judge. Then, in 2008, Doyne was named the assignment judge of the Bergen County Superior Court. As such, he served as the chief judicial officer tasked with overseeing the administration of all court units within the vicinage, including the court staff, judges, and municipal courts.

Doyne received a B.A. in philosophy from Lafayette College in 1973. He went on to complete a J.D. at Rutgers Law School in 1976.

Prior to joining the bench, Doyne worked as a private practice attorney in Hackensack. This included practicing as a partner in the law firm of Ferro, Doyne, Labella & Logerfo (1992 to 1993), a sole practitioner in his own private practice (1989 to 1992), a partner in Melli & Doyne (1982 to 1989), and an associate and partner in the Law Office of Donald Conway (1976 to 1992).

During his judicial tenure, Doyne sat as a member of the Supreme Court Special Committee on Peremptory Challenges and Jury Voir Dire, the Committee on Salaries and Pensions, and the Advisory Committee on Judicial Conduct.

His memberships have included the Morris Pashman American Inn of Court (past president), the New Jersey State Bar Association, the New Jersey Fellows of the American Bar Foundation, and the New York State Bar Association.

After retiring from the bench, Doyne became a partner in the law firm of Ferro, Labella & Weiss, L.L.C. in 2015. At the firm, he has served as co-chair of its alternative dispute resolution and corporate investigations practices.

He received the Byron Baer Public Service Award from Bergen Grassroots in 2016.

Doyne was born in New York City. In his free time, the father of four enjoys reading, gardening, and golfing.
