The Hon. Pauline Maxwell is a judge for the Santa Barbara County Superior Court in California. She was appointed to the bench by former Governor Jerry Brown in 2014. She filled the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Denise de Bellefeuille (Ret.).

She is a registered Democrat.

Judge Maxwell received her B.A. with honors from the University of California, Santa Barbara. She went on to earn her J.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles School of Law in 1998.

Prior to her appointment to the bench, Maxwell had served as a court commissioner for the Santa Barbara Superior Court since 2010 and as a research attorney since 2006. During her four-year tenure as a court commissioner, Maxwell presided over the Drug Court, the Mental Health Treatment Court, and the Clean and Sober calendar. Her other assignments included minor offense arraignments and trials.

Before joining the Court, Maxwell worked in private practice. She was an associate at Foley and Lardner from 1997 to 2001, in-house counsel at Tenet Healthcare for one year, and a senior litigation associate at Grokenberger and Smith from 2002 to 2006.

She has also taught legal writing as an adjunct professor at the Santa Barbara College of Law from 2007 to 2009.

Her memberships have included the William L. Gordon Inns of Court and the Santa Barbara Women Lawyers.

She received the Deborah Talmage Attorney of the Year Award by the Santa Barbara Women Lawyers in 2013 and the Founding Mothers Award in 2015.

Judge Maxwell was born in Massachusetts and worked as a registered nurse there before moving to California in 1981.
