Biography

The Hon. Paul W. Thompson is a judge for the Snohomish County Superior Court in Washington. He was appointed to the bench by Governor Jay Inslee in 2018.

Prior to his appointment, Thompson served as a public defender for the Snohomish County Public Defender’s Office. He represented indigent clients with mental health, housing, and addiction challenges, becoming an expert in restorative justice and alternative approaches to mental health and addiction treatment.

Thompson earned a bachelor’s degree from Eastern Washington University in 1995. He spent the next several years working in bicycle shops while pursuing a bicycle racing career. Then, in 2004, he completed a J.D. at Gonzaga University School of Law.

His memberships have included the Washington Defender Association (president) as well as the Board of the Washington Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and the Board of Sharing Wheels.

Thompson residents in Edmonds, Washington. His partner, Whitney, serves as a public defender.
