Judge Patrick J. McGraw - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

Hon. Patrick J. McGraw is a judge for the Saginaw County Probate Court in Michigan. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor John Engler on December 6, 1999.

During his judicial tenure, McGraw was appointed Chief Judge of the Tenth Circuit Court by the Michigan Supreme Court in 2017. He has also served as Senior Judge of the Saginaw County Probate Court and Tenth Circuit Court and presided over the specialty court’s Swift and Sure program.

Prior to his appointment, he was in private practice for nineteen years, including as a managing partner alongside his father, John W. McGraw. During that time, he specialized in medical malpractice, insurance defense, personal injury, and other trial practice matters.

He received a B.S. from Central Michigan University in 1979. McGraw went on to complete a J.D. at Western Michigan University, Thomas M. Cooley Law School in 1981.

His memberships have included the American Bar Association, the Probate and Estate Planning Section of the State Bar of Michigan, the Saginaw County Bar Association, the Michigan Probate Judges Association (past president), and the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges.

McGraw has served as a presenter for the Michigan Probate Judges Association and the Michigan Guardianship Association. He is also credited with helping to develop the Saginaw County First Responder’s Guide, and he assisted in the production of a training video in 2021 for judges, staff, and community partners on how to handle a case under Chapter 4 of the Michigan Mental Health Code.

McGraw received the Local Legislator of the Year award from the Police Officers Association of Michigan (1994) and the Distinguished Service Award from the Michigan Defense Trial Counsel (1999). He was named an Everyday Hero by the Saginaw County Community Mental Health Authority in 2006.

He was born and raised in Saginaw and attended Sts. Peter and Paul High School.
