Judge Patrick J. McGrath: Professional Background and Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Patrick J. McGrath is a justice for the Rensselaer County Supreme Court in the Third Judicial District of New York. He was elected to the bench in 2009.

His judicial career began in 1985 when he was elected to serve as a judge for the Troy Police Court in Rensselaer County. Then, in 1994, Justice McGrath was elected to the Rensselaer County Court bench. He remained on the County Court until his election to the Supreme Court seat.

McGrath earned a B.A. from Manhattan College in 1975. He completed a J.D. from Albany Law School three years later.

After graduating from law school, McGrath began his legal career as chief clerk for the Albany County Surrogate’s Court in 1978. Two years later, he joined the Office of the District Attorney of Rensselaer County, where he briefly served as an assistant district attorney.

McGrath was admonished by the New York State Commission on Judicial Conduct in 2004 and in 2010. The first admonishment came after the Commission concluded that McGrath had made improper comments on television about a pending case. The second admonishment was in response to unethical behavior during his 2008 election campaign.

He is registered as a Democrat.
