The Hon. Patrick A. Cathcart (Ret.) was a judge for the Los Angeles County Superior Court in California. He was appointed to the bench in 2012 by former governor Jerry Brown. At the time of his appointment, he filled the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Judith L. Champagne (Ret.). Cathcart retired from the bench in 2018, and the Hon. Diego H. Edber succeeded him on the bench.
Cathcart was registered as a Democrat.
He received his B.A. in history from Stanford University in 1968. After graduating from Stanford, Cathcart joined the United States Peace Corps, where he served as a volunteer in Iran from 1969 to 1971.
Cathcart worked as a paralegal for the law firm of Munger, Tolles, and Olson LLP from 1971 to 1972. He then attended the University of California, Hastings College of the Law, where he earned his J.D. in 1975. While in law school, Cathcart served as a research assistant for the Hon. Arthur J. Goldberg (Ret.), a former U.S. Supreme Court Justice.
After graduating from law school, Cathcart became a clerk for the Hon. Spencer Willimas with the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California from 1975 to 1977. After completing his clerkship, he joined the San Francisco law firm of Morrison and Foerster LLP as an associate. In 1979 he joined the law firm of Hancock, Rothert and Bunshoft LLP as an associate. He practiced for the firm for 26 years and was eventually named a partner. In 2005 Cathcart left the firm to become a founder and named partner for Cathcart Collins LLP. After three years there, he became a shareholder at the law firm of Alvarado Smith APC in 2008.
During his lengthy legal career, Cathcart practiced complex business litigation with an emphasis on insurance coverage actions and professional liability matters. He was practicing at Alvarado Smith at the time of his appointment to the Superior Court in 2012.
Some of his memberships have included serving as past-president of the Association of Business Trial Lawyers, as well as having been a member of the Chancery Club of Los Angeles, and serving on the Los Angeles Superior Court Central Civil Bench-Bar Liaison Committee.
His awards include being named one of the Best Lawyers in America in 2006, and a Law & Politics Media, Inc. Southern California SuperLawyer in 2003.
Cathcart, who was born in Palo Alto, California, enjoys traveling, hiking, wood-working, and carpentry, as well as playing golf.
