Judge Patricia L. McGuire - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

Hon. Patricia L. McGuire is a judge for the 4th Judicial District Circuit Court of Oregon in Multnomah County. She was appointed to the bench by former Governor Kate Brown in September 2017, filling the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Diana I. Stuart (Ret.).

McGuire has held an assignment in the Family Law Department, where she presides over family law, juvenile law, and probate cases.

Prior to her appointment, she handled family law matters as a private practice attorney for ten years. During that time, she practiced at McGuire Thompson (2013 to 2017) and Bobzien McGuire (2007 to 2013). McGuire is also a former partner at Davis Wright Tremaine, where her practice included construction defects, antitrust, product liability, and general commercial disputes. She first worked as a clerk at the firm during law school and was hired full-time after graduating. During her ten-year tenure, she was named a partner in her sixth year.

McGuire received a B.A. in graphic design from Oregon State University. She then spent time as a graphic designer for an architect before working in the Port of Portland for a company that performed ship repairs. McGuire eventually left that position to work in San Diego, California, before completing a J.D. at Lewis & Clark Law School in 1995.

She was admitted to practice in Oregon in 1996.

McGuire was appointed by the Chief Justice to serve as a member of the State Family Law Advisory Committee in 2019.

She volunteered her time for the Pro Se Assistance Project and Expungement Clinic through Legal Aid Services of Oregon and has also been involved with the boards of Rock ‘n’ Roll Camp for Girls, the NW Coalition for Human Dignity, and St. Andrews Legal Clinic.

In addition, McGuire served as an instructor and unit coach for Grant High School’s “We the People” constitutional debate team and as a mentor for new attorneys and law students through the Oregon State Bar.

She was born in Portland, Oregon, and attended Grant High School.
