Judge Norma A. Sierra - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

Hon. Norma A. Sierra (Ret.) was a judge for the 20th Judicial District Court of Colorado. She was appointed to the bench by former Governor John Hickenlooper on July 16, 2015, filling the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Dolores Mallard (Ret.). Sierra retired on October 6, 2022.

The 20th Judicial District includes Boulder County.

During her tenure on the District Court, Sierra heard civil, domestic relations, and probate cases. Prior to her appointment, she presided as a judge for the Boulder County Court, a position to which she was appointed by former Governor Bill Ritter in 2011, and was a district court magistrate for the 20th Judicial District before that (2002 to 2011).

Over the course of her legal career, Sierra also served as the chief deputy district attorney and family court facilitator for the 1st Judicial District and managed her own private practice for four years (1996 to 2000). In addition, she worked as a trial attorney for the United States Department of Justice (1990 to 1993). Her practice included mediation and domestic relations.

Sierra received a B.B.A. from the University of Texas at El Paso in 1984. She went on to complete a J.D. at the University of Texas at Austin School of Law in 1987.

Sierra was admitted to practice in Colorado (1994), the District of Columbia, and Texas (1987).
