Judge Michael W. Rickett - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

Hon. Michael W. Rickett is a judge for the Wayne County Municipal Court in Ohio. He was elected to the bench in 2017.

Prior to his election, Rickett was the chief criminal prosecutor for the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office, having worked in that capacity since 2016. As such, he supervised the Felony and Misdemeanor Divisions in Wayne County and provided legal advice and training to various Wayne County departments as the Law Enforcement Liaison.

Rickett had previously served as a prosecutor in the office’s Juvenile Division for one year beginning in 2011. In between his positions there, he was a prosecutor in the Felony Division in Summit County (2012 to 2016), where he first worked as an assistant prosecuting attorney in the Juvenile and Felony Divisions for five years beginning in 2006 (2006 to 2011).

In addition to his prosecutorial work, he also served as a magistrate for the Mayor’s Courts in Mount Eaton, Marshallville, Shreve, and West Salem.

Rickett has taught Business Law as an adjunct instructor at The Ohio State University and was a former adjunct professor at the University of Akron School of Law, where he taught Trial Advocacy I and II.

He received a bachelor’s degree from Wheaton College in 2000. Rickett went on to complete a J.D. at the University of Akron School of Law in 2004.

After graduating from law school, he began his legal career as a federal law clerk to the Hon. Randolph Baxter (Ret.), Chief Judge of the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Ohio.

Rickett was born and raised in Wayne County, Ohio, and he attended Wooster High School.
