Judge Michael T. Douglass - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

Hon. Michael T. Douglass is a magistrate for the Allen County Superior Court in Indiana. He was appointed in 2019.

During his judicial tenure, Douglass has held an assignment in the Small Claims Division, where he hears civil cases, including landlord-tenant issues, protective order requests, and contract disputes. He first joined the bench as a magistrate in the Family Division of the Allen County Superior Court in 2016, remaining in that capacity until 2018.

Prior to his appointment, Douglass was an attorney at Eilbacher Fletcher, LLP (2018 to 2019).

Before his first stint on the bench, he worked as an attorney at Leonard, Hammond, Thoma & Terrill (2015 to 2016); a deputy public defender with the Allen County Public Defender’s Office (2013 to 2016); a sole practitioner at the Douglass Law Firm (2009 to 2015); an attorney at the Sweeney Law Firm (2007 to 2009); and a deputy prosecutor with the Allen County Prosecutor’s Office (2006 to 2007).

Douglass also presided as a judge pro tem in both the Allen County Superior and Circuit Courts.

He received a B.S. in public affairs from Indiana University in 2001. Douglass went on to complete a J.D. at Western Michigan University, Thomas M. Cooley Law School in 2006. He was admitted to practice in Indiana (2006), Colorado (2006), and the United States District Court for the Northern District of Indiana.

Douglass served as a member of the Judicial Conference of Indiana Protection Order Committee, which is credited with overhauling the state’s Protection Order statutes. It is also responsible for updating Indiana’s Protection Order Deskbook and helps in the development of forms, procedures, and the protection order registry.

Douglass is a native of Fort Wayne, Indiana. He and his wife, Lesley, have two children. When not presiding over legal matters, he enjoys being involved with his community, attending his children’s sporting events, and spending time outdoors.
