Biography

The Hon. Michael R. Goulding is a judge for the General Division of the Lucas County Court of Common Pleas in Ohio. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor John Kasich on August 26, 2013, filling a vacancy created by the election of the Hon. James D. Jensen to the Ohio Sixth District Court of Appeals.

The Ohio Supreme Court issued a fully stayed six-month suspension to Goulding for interfering in a case assigned to another judge. The Supreme Court determined that Goulding abused the prestige of his office when he became involved with the criminal case of his friends' daughter’s boyfriend in 2019.

Prior to his appointment, Goulding sat as a judge for the Toledo Municipal Court, a position to which he was selected in 2007. Before that, he was an attorney in private practice, working at Shindler, Neff, Holmes, Schlageter & Mohler in Toledo (1995 to 1998).

Goulding earned a bachelor’s degree in English from the Ohio State University. During this time, he worked as a page in the Ohio House of Representatives, working for Speaker Vern Riffe, Jr. He then completed a J.D. at the University of Toledo College of Law in 1995.

Born and raised in Toledo, Goulding attended St. Frances de Sales High School. When not presiding over legal matters, he enjoys playing the bass guitar and drums. He is a former member of a Spinal Tap tribute band called Evil Vomit.

He is registered as a Republican.
