Biography

The Hon. Michael P. Murphy is a judge for the 9th Judicial Circuit Court of Florida. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Charlie Crist in 2010, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. R. James Stroker.

The 9th Judicial Circuit encompasses Osceola County and Orange County. Murphy has held assignments in both counties, presiding over cases in the Criminal Division, the Domestic Relations Division, the Civil Division, the Juvenile Delinquency Division, and the Probate, Guardianship & Mental Health Division.

Prior to his appointment, Murphy was a judge for the Orange County Court, a position to which he was elected in 2004.

Murphy earned a B.S. in business administration from the University of Florida in 1991. He then completed a J.D. at the University of Florida, Fredric G. Levin College of Law, in 1995.

After graduating from law school, Murphy entered into private practice, becoming an attorney at the Law Office of Donald A. Lykkebak. He worked in that capacity for one year, eventually leaving to join the Office of the State Attorney for the 18th Judicial Circuit as an assistant state attorney.

Then, in 1998, Murphy returned to private practice. He opened his own private practice as a sole practitioner, supplementing his practice with service as an attorney to the Law Office of Stuart I. Hyman and a staff attorney to the University of Central Florida Student Legal Services.

His memberships have included the Osceola County Bar Association, the Florida Bar Association, and the Winter Park Chamber of Commerce. He has also taught as an adjunct professor at the University of Central Florida.
