View Judge DashboardThe Hon. Michael P. Linfield is a judge for the Los Angeles County Superior Court in California. He was appointed to the bench in 2003 by former governor Gray Davis. He filled the vacancy created by the elevation of the Hon. Madeleine Flier to the Court of Appeal.
Judge Linfield graduated cum laude with his B.A. in philosophy from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1972. After graduating from college, Linfield took a hiatus from his studies to become a volunteer for the United Farm Worker's Union (UFW), a U.S. labor union that got its start in 1962 when it was co-founded by the civil rights activist, Cesar Chavez. Linfield also served as the UFW's chief lobbyist in Sacramento at Chavez' behest. Then, in the early '80s, Linfield became the special liaison to the former governor of California, Jerry Brown, as well as served as the Deputy Mayor for the City of West Hollywood.
Linfield would ultimately resume his studies in 1986 in the pursuit of his law degree. He graduated magna cum laude with his J.D. from Harvard Law School in 1989. While at Harvard, Linfield served an internship from 1987 to 1988 for the Chief Justice of the Nicaraguan Supreme Court.
After graduating from law school, Linfield joined the law firm of Alschuler, Grossman, and Pines as an associate in 1989. During his three years with the firm, Linfield practiced complex financial litigation. Then, in 1992, Linfield entered into solo practice, where he specialized in discrimination, employment, and consumer fraud cases. He remained in private practice until his appointment to the Superior Court in 2003.
Linfield served as a judge pro tem, mediator, and arbitrator for the Superior Court. He has also been a panelist for his alma mater, Harvard Law School.
In 1990, Linfield published a book on the subject of civil liberties in times of war.
