Biography

The Hon. Michael E. McCarthy is a judge for the Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas in Pennsylvania. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Ed Rendell on June 18, 2007.

Prior to his appointment, McCarthy served as an Assistant District Attorney in the Allegheny County District Attorney’s Office. During his tenure there, he held assignments in the White Collar Crime Unit, where he became a wiretap expert. He has also worked as a sole practitioner in his own private practice as well as the Administrative Chairman of the Court of Common Pleas Board of Viewers.

McCarthy earned a bachelor’s degree from Duquesne University in 1976. He then completed a J.D. at Duquesne University School of Law in 1984.

He is a recipient of the Judges Award from the Pennsylvania Bar Foundation (2010), and he was named the Veteran of Foreign Wars Man of the Year (2010). He is also a member of the Duquesne University Sports Hall of Fame.

McCarthy was raised in an Irish Catholic family in Pittsburgh. He is a veteran of the United States Naval Construction Battalions, and he served in the Vietnam War.
