Judge Michael C. Wetzel - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Michael C. Wetzel is a judge for the 5th Judicial District Circuit Court of Oregon. He was elected to the bench on May 15, 2012, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Ronald D. Thom.

The 5th Judicial District encompasses Clackamas County.

Prior to his appointment, Wetzel was a partner at Fitzwater Meyer, a law firm he joined in 2007. During his tenure there, he specialized in estate planning and administration, real estate, and tax matters. He also assisted small and mid-size companies in business formation, buy-sell agreements, purchase and sale transactions, and mergers.

Wetzel earned a bachelor’s degree in economics and history from Willamette University in 1991. He then completed a j.D. at Vanderbilt University Law School in 1995.

After graduating from law school, Wetzel entered into private practice. He spent the next few years working as an associate at Fowler & McNair (1995 to 1998), Wetzel DeFrang & Sandor (1998 to 2001), and Sussman Shank (2001 to 2007).

His memberships have included the Clackamas County Economic Development Commission.

Born in Damascus, Oregon, Wetzel is a veteran of the Oregon Army National Guard, where he has served as Deputy Regional Defense Counsel for Trial Defense Services.
