Judge Michael A. Oster, Jr. - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

Hon. Michael A. Oster, Jr. is a judge for the Butler County Court of Common Pleas (General Division) in Ohio. He was elected to the bench on November 4, 2014.

During his tenure on the Court of Common Pleas, Oster has presided on the Veteran’s Court since 2017 and was elected administrative judge of the court in 2019.

He was also appointed by the Ohio Supreme Court to serve as a member of the Commission on Continuing Legal Education, serving as a judge for a three-year term (2018 to 2020).

Oster received a B.A. in psychology from Malone College in 1999. He went on to complete a J.D. at the University of Cincinnati College of Law in 2003. As a law student, Oster was named Executive Director of the school’s Moot Court Honors Board and was selected to the National Order of the Barristers. In addition, he received the J. Carro Consummate Advocate Award.

After graduating from law school, Oster began his legal career as an assistant prosecuting attorney with the Butler County Prosecutor’s Office. During his tenure there, he was named chief of the Appellate Division in 2007, argued ten times before the Ohio Supreme Court, and prosecuted four capital murder cases before the Court of Common Pleas, obtaining two death verdicts. He held his Appellate Division assignment until his election to the bench.

For his work there, Oster was awarded the Board of Directors’ Appellate Award for Outstanding Advocacy in Capital Cases from the Association of Government Attorney’s in Capital Litigation (2011 to 2012).

His memberships have included the Butler County Bar Association, the Ohio State Bar Association, the Ohio Judicial Conference, and the Ohio Common Pleas Judges Association. Oster has also held memberships with the Ohio Judicial Conference’s Criminal Law and Procedure Committee, Specialized Docket Committee, and Court Administration Committee.

Oster, who was recognized as an academic All-American in Men’s Soccer at Malone College, is the varsity head coach of the High School Men’s Soccer Team at Monroe High School. He was named the Div. II All-Ohio Coach of the Year in 2018.

He has been a volunteer with the Ohio Special Olympics and Autism Society of Cincinnati and active with Upward Basketball.

His civic involvement also included serving as a personnel board member for the City of Malone and finance director and a member of the Board of Servant Leaders of Water’s Edge United Methodist Church.

Oster is a married father of two. At the time of his election, he resided in West Chester with his family.
