Judge Michael A. Ambrosio - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Michael A. Ambrosio (Ret.) was a judge for the Kings County Family Court in the Second Judicial District of New York. He was first appointed to the Family Court by former Mayor Ed Koch in 1983. He received subsequent appointments by former Mayor David Dinkins (1992 to 2002) and former Mayor Michael Bloomberg (2002 to 2012; 2012 to 2022).

During his tenure on the bench, he was appointed to serve as an acting justice of the Kings County Supreme Court. He also presided on the Civil and Matrimonial Terms.

Ambrosio received a B.A. from Fordham University in 1966. He went on to earn a J.D. from Harvard Law School in 1969.

After law school, he worked as a staff attorney with the Mental Hygiene Legal Services for the First Judicial District (1969 to 1972). Ambrosio also worked as associate counsel for the Grievance Committee of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York (1972 to 1974) and assistant corporation counsel with the New York City Law Department’s Appeals Division (1974 to 1975).

In 1975, Ambrosio returned to the Mental Hygiene Legal Services for the First Judicial District, this time serving as its deputy director. During his tenure there, he also served as treasurer of the Bronx County Legal Services Corporation (1979 to 1983).
