The Hon. Melissa R. McCormick is a judge on the Orange County Superior Court in California. She was appointed to the bench by Governor Jerry Brown on July 16, 2015, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Marjorie L. Carter.
Prior to her appointment, McCormick spent eighteen years at Irell & Manella. During her tenure there, she represented clients in complex business litigation and intellectual property matters, holding positions as an associate (1997 to 2003) and a partner (2004 to 2015).
McCormick earned a B.A. from Stanford University in 1992. She then received a J.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles School of Law, in 1995. She was licensed to practice in California (1995).
After graduating from law school, McCormick began her legal career as a judicial law clerk to the Hon. Judith N. Keep of the United States District Court for the Southern District of California. She worked in that capacity until 1996, at which time she began clerking for the Hon. Emilio M. Garza of the United States Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit.
Her memberships have included the Association of Business Trial Lawyers. She has also served on the Judicial Board of the Constitutional Rights Foundation of Orange County.
McCormick was a resident of Laguna Beach, California, at the time of her appointment to the bench. Her husband, the Hon. Douglas F. McCormick, has served as a magistrate on the United States District Court for the Central District of California.
She is registered without party preference.
