Judge Melisa C. Skinner: Professional Background and Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Melisa C. Skinner (Ret.) served as a judge for the 437th District Court in Bexar County, Texas. Skinner was appointed to the bench by Governor Greg Abbott on April 12, 2021, filling a vacancy created by the elevation of the Hon. Lori Valenzuela to the 4th District Court of Appeals. She resigned at the conclusion of her term on December 31, 2022.

Prior to her appointment, Skinner was an assistant district attorney with the 38th Judicial District Attorney’s Office. In that position, she prosecuted US/Mexico smuggling and human trafficking cases as a member of the Texas Anti-Gang Task Force.

Skinner earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas at Austin in 1984. She then completed a J.D. at St. Mary's University School of Law in 1993.

After graduating from law school, Skinner began her legal career as an assistant district attorney with the Bexar County District Attorney’s Office. She also spent time as a judge for the 144th District Court and the 290th District Court (2011 to 2018).

Her memberships have included the Texas State Rifle Association, the Republican Business Women’s Association, the Daughters of the Republic of Texas (Alamo Heroes Chapter), the San Antonio Junior Forum, and Beethoven Damenchor. She has also been involved with the Ronald McDonald House, the San Antonio Conservation Society, and Our Lady of Perpetual Help.

She is a recipient of the Law Enforcement Commendation Medal from the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution.

She is registered as a Republican.
