Judge Mary Margaret Rowlands: Professional Background and Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Mary Margaret Rowlands is a judge for the General Division of the Summit County Court of Common Pleas in Ohio. She was elected to the bench on November 4, 2008.

Rowlands has presided over the Re-entry Court, which provides intensive supervision, support, and direction to recently released inmates.

Prior to her election, Rowlands was a partner at Whitaker & Rowlands Co. in Akron, where she handled civil and criminal matters. She was also the Chief Legal Counsel for the Summit County Fiscal Office (2005).

Rowlands earned a bachelor’s degree from Youngstown State University. She then completed a J.D. at the University of Akron School of Law in 1989.

Her memberships have included the Akron Bar Association, the Ohio Bar Association, and the Charles F. Scanlon Chapter of the American Inns of Court. She has also served as the International Association of Women Judges delegate to the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women, and she sits on the Civic Theater Board and the Gay Community Endowment Fund Board.
