Biography

The Hon. Mary L. Morrissey is a judge for the Vermont Superior Court. She was appointed to the bench by former Governor Peter Shumlin in 2016.

Morrissey has held assignments in the Family and Criminal Divisions in Lamoille County and the Probate Division in Franklin and Grand Isle Counties. She has also presided in Chittenden and Washington Counties, including overseeing the drug treatment court in Washington County.

Prior to her appointment, she served as the chief deputy state’s attorney for major crimes in Chittenden County, where her caseload included complex criminal cases involving homicides and sexual assaults. Morrissey also oversaw the Juvenile Court docket and acted as the primary liaison between the State’s Attorney’s Office and the courts and local police. In addition to her prosecutorial responsibilities, she is credited with developing and implementing several alternative criminal justice programs, including the Rapid Intervention Community Court and the Driver Restoration Day. Morrissey served on the Policy Board for the Chittenden Unit Special Investigations and the Vermont Children’s Justice Act Task Force.

She received a bachelor’s degree from St. Michael’s College. Morrissey then completed a J.D. at the University of New Hampshire, Franklin Pierce School of Law.

She was raised in Jericho, Vermont. Morrissey and her husband have three children.
