Biography

The Hon. Martin Schoenfeld (Ret.) was a justice of the Supreme Court of the State of New York, Appellate Term, First Judicial Department. He was appointed to the Appellate Term by former Chief Administrative Judge Jonathan Lippman in 2002. Schoenfeld retired in 2017.

At the time of his appointment, he was serving as a justice of the New York County Supreme Court. Schoenfeld was elected to the Supreme Court bench in 1995 and was retained in subsequent elections. His judicial career began when he was first elected to serve as a judge for the Civil Court of the City of New York in 1985. During his tenure on the Civil Court, Schoenfeld was appointed acting justice of the New York County Supreme Court in 1989.

He received a bachelor’s degree from Brooklyn College in 1968. Schoenfeld went on to complete a J.D. at Syracuse University College of Law in 1971.

After law school, he joined Kummel, Rogers, Kaufman & Shenkman, where he practiced until 1978. Schoenfeld then became a law secretary to the Hon. Jerome W. Marks, justice of the New York State Supreme Court. He remained in that capacity until assuming the Civil Court bench.
