Biography

The Hon. Mark S. Borrell is a judge for the Ventura County Superior Court in California. He was appointed to the bench in 2010 by former governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.

He is a registered Democrat.

Judge Borrell received his B.S. from the University of Colorado at Boulder. He went on to earn his J.D. from the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law in 1986.

After graduating from law school, Borrell joined his father, Roger Borrell's Ventura law firm, Borrell and Long. After the firm dissolved in 1989, he remained in practice with his father at the self-named Borrell and Borrell until his father's retirement in 1993. He would then join the law firm of Benton, Orr, Duvall, and Buckingham, where he practiced as an attorney and shareholder for the next twelve years.

Then, in 2005, he was selected to serve as a court commissioner for the Ventura County Superior Court. He remained in that position until his appointment to the bench five years later.

During his time on the bench, Judge Borrell presided over a civil trial and law and motion calendar. He has also served as presiding judge of the court's Appellate Division.

While a court commissioner, Borrell was named the Alternative Dispute Resolution Advocate of the Year in 2008 by the Ventura County Bar Association's ADR Section and the Ventura Center for Dispute Settlement, for his efforts to promote and expand the Small Claims Mediation Program. The initiative sought to resolve small claims matters outside of the courts by using mediation as a resolution alternative.

In his free time, Borrell enjoys participating in historical reenactments.
