Biography

The Hon. Mark A. Simpson is a judge for the 7th Judicial District Court of Kansas in Douglas County. He was appointed to the bench by Governor Laura Kelly in 2019, filling the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Paula Martin.

Simpson has presided over the Douglas County Drug Court.

Prior to his appointment, he was a senior assistant district attorney with the Douglas County District Attorney’s Office, where he prosecuted cases for eleven years, including murder, rape, domestic violence, child abuse, drug, and traffic cases. Simpson is also credited with assisting in the creation and operation of the Douglas County Behavioral Health Court.

He received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Kansas in 2003. Simpson then completed a J.D. at the University of Kansas School of Law in 2008.

Simpson was raised in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Before pursuing his legal career, he worked as a staffer at the Kansas Democratic Party and helped manage the 2006 election campaign of then-Attorney General Paul Morrison.
