Biography

The Hon. Maritza Martinez is a judge for the Circuit Court of Cook County in Illinois. Martinez was appointed to the bench by the Illinois Supreme Court on December 1, 2014.

While on the bench, her assignments have included the First Municipal District, the Traffic Section, the Felony Preliminary Hearings Section, the Misdemeanor Section, the Non-Jury Civil Section, the Forcible Entry and Detainer Section, and the Domestic Relations Division.

Martinez earned a B.A. in English from Loyola University Chicago in 1986. She then completed a J.D. at Loyola University Chicago School of Law in 1989. She was admitted to practice in Illinois (1989).

After graduating from law school, Martinez entered private practice. She worked as an associate at Jancovic & Ponticelli, where she handled employment law, commercial litigation, and real estate matters. Then, in 1991, Martinez joined the City of Chicago Corporation Counsel as an assistant corporation counsel, serving in the Municipal Prosecutions Division (1991 to 1996) and the Individual Defense Litigation Division (1996 to 2004).

Martinez returned to the private sector in 2004. She briefly worked as a senior associate at Patton & Ryan (2004 to 2005) before joining Robert A. Fisher (2005 to 2012) and the Law Offices of Victor J. Cacciatore (2012 to 2014). During this time, she specialized in criminal defense and civil rights litigation.

While in private practice, Martinez supplemented her practice as a commissioner for the Illinois Court of Claims, a position to which she was named in 2007. In that role, she conducted trials, procured evidence, and made recommendations to the Court of Claims judges on the dispositions of monetary claims.

Her memberships have included the Illinois Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission and as chair of the Inquiry Board Panel.

Martinez has been an active volunteer with St. Viator Parish Art Zone, a Level II Swimming Official for the YMCA, and a volunteer at Recovery on Water (ROW).

She attended Mother Theodore Guerin High School.

Martinez is registered as a Democrat.
