Biography

The Hon. Marina Garcia-Wood is a judge for the 17th Judicial Circuit Court of Florida in Broward County. She was elected to the bench on November 7, 2006, and re-elected in 2012 and 2018.

Prior to her election, Garcia-Wood was a general magistrate for the Juvenile Dependency Division of the 17th Judicial Circuit of Florida, a position to which she was named in 2002.

Garcia-Wood earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from Florida International University in 1982. She then completed a J.D. at the University of Florida, Fredric G. Levin College of Law, in 1986. She was admitted to the State Bar of Florida in 1988.

After graduating from law school, Garcia-Wood entered into private practice at the Law Office of Walker M. Dingwall. She initially specialized in commercial matters before focusing on matrimonial and family law. Garcia-Wood supplemented her practice with service as an assistant county attorney for the Office of the Broward County Attorney.

Her memberships have included the Broward County Hispanic Bar Association. She has also been involved with the City of Hollywood Hispanic Affairs Council, the Florida Board of Pharmacy, the Broward County Charter Review Commission, and Autism Speaks.

She is a recipient of El Cuadro de Honor from the Broward County Hispanic Bar Association (1991) and the Woman of Distinction Award from the City of Hollywood (2000).

Garcia-Wood was born in Santiago de Cuba, where her father spent three years in a forced labor camp. Then, in 1969, her family boarded a Freedom Flight to Miami, where her father worked as an automobile mechanic and her mother as a hotel maid.
