Judge Maria I. Sampedro-Iglesia: Professional Background and Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Maria I. Sampedro-Iglesia (Ret.) served as a judge for the 11th Judicial Circuit Court of Florida in Miami-Dade County. Sampedro-Iglesia was elected to the bench in 2008. She retired in 2019.

Sampedro-Iglesia held assignments on the Unified Family Court and the Complex Litigation Division. She also served as an associate administrative judge of the Unified Children's Court Division. She is credited with establishing the G.R.A.C.E. Court, a court in the 11th Judicial Circuit devoted to supporting child victims of human trafficking.

Prior to her election, Sampedro-Iglesia was a partner at Jose R. Iglesia and Associates, a law firm she joined in 1998. She specialized in first-party insurance litigation matters. Before that, Sampedro-Iglesia spent time as in-house counsel for AIB Financial Group, sitting as the supervisor to the insurance litigation adjuster and managing the organization’s Florida No-Fault Litigation Group.

Sampedro-Iglesia earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Miami in 1985. She then completed a J.D. at the University of Miami School of Law in 1988.

Shortly after graduating from law school, Sampedro-Iglesia opened her own private practice as a sole practitioner. She worked in that capacity until 1991, at which time she became an associate at the Law Offices of Carlos Lidsky. She spent the next year with the firm, eventually leaving to join the Law Office of Carlos Diaz-Padron in 1992. During her tenure there, Sampedro-Iglesia practiced insurance defense litigation.

Her memberships have included the Cuban American Bar Association, the Florida Association for Women Lawyers, the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges, the National Association of Professional Women, the National Association of Women Judges, and the Wilkie D. Ferguson, Jr. Bar Association.

Sampedro-Iglesia received the William E. Gladstone Award from the Florida Department of Children and Families in 2018.
