Biography

The Hon. Lorna J. McAllister is a justice for the Kings County Supreme Court in the 2nd Judicial District of New York. McAllister was elected to the Supreme Court bench on November 8, 2022.

The 2nd Judicial District includes Kings County. McAllister has held an assignment over the Matrimonial Part of the Civil Term.

Prior to her election, she was a judge on the Criminal Court of the City of New York in Kings County, a position to which she was elected in 2015. While on the Criminal Court, McAllister held assignments in the Civil Court of the City of New York in Kings County (2018 to 2020) and as an acting justice of the Kings County Supreme Court (2020 to 2022).

McAllister earned a B.A. from Smith College (1984) and a master’s degree from Rutgers University. She then completed a J.D. at Rutgers Law School in 1991. She was admitted to practice in New York (1995).

After graduating from law school, McAllister became an attorney at Belovin & Franzblau, LLP in Albany, a law practice she maintained for ten years.

Then, in 2008, she joined the New York State Unified Court System, where she worked until her election to the bench. During this time, McAllister served as a court attorney to Hon. Robin K. Sheares and as a principal court attorney to Hon. Peter P. Sweeney with the Civil Court of the City of New York in Kings County.

Her memberships have included the Brooklyn Women’s Bar Association and the Judicial Friends Association.

Her husband, Jesse Hamilton, has served as a Central Brooklyn State Senator.

She is registered as a Democrat.
