Judge Lisa Ortlieb Gorcyca: Professional Background and Legal Expertise

Biography

Hon. Lisa Ortlieb Gorcyca is a judge for the Sixth Circuit Court of Michigan in Oakland County. She was elected to the bench on November 8, 2008.

During her judicial tenure, Gorcyca has presided over the Family Division.

Prior to her election, she had worked for fifteen years as an assistant prosecuting attorney with the Office of the Prosecuting Attorney in Oakland County (1993 to 2008). During her tenure there, Gorcyca was Chief of the Domestic Violence and Elder Abuse Units.

She received a B.S. in criminal justice from Michigan State University in 1989. Gorcyca went on to complete a J.D. at Detroit College of Law in 1993.

She was the founder and former chair of the Oakland County Domestic Violence Fatality Review Team. Gorcyca also sat as co-chair of the Oakland County Coordinating Council Against Domestic Violence and served as a member of the Royal Oak Task Force Against Domestic Violence.

In addition, she was a past board member of the Troy Community Coalition for the Prevention of Drug and Alcohol Abuse and served as an instructor for the Oakland Police Academy and a lecturer for the Domestic Violence course and Basic Training with the Prosecuting Attorney Association of Michigan.

Gorcyca was named “A Crime Fighting Mom” by United States Senator Carl Levin in 2008 for her work in crime prevention and her efforts to create a safer community.

In 2017, she was publicly censured by the Michigan Judicial Tenure Commission for judicial misconduct stemming from “demeaning and disparaging remarks” made to three children during a custody case. Gorcyca had found the children in contempt of court for refusing to speak to their father.
