Judge Lionel Jean-Baptiste - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Lionel Jean-Baptiste is a circuit judge of the Domestic Relations Division of the Circuit Court of Cook County. He was appointed to the bench by the Illinois Supreme Court in 2011. He was then elected to the seat in 2012 and re-elected in 2018.

Before pursuing a legal career, Jean-Baptiste graduated with a B.A. from Princeton University in 1974. He then went on to earn his J.D. in 1990 from Chicago-Kent College of Law.

After earning his law degree, Jean-Baptiste worked in private practice specializing in immigration, personal injury, probate, and transactional law. Before taking the bench seat, Jean-Baptiste served as Alderman for the town of Evanston from 2001 to 2011.

In addition to his services to the court, Jean Baptiste founded the Haitian American Lawyers Association of Illinois and formerly served as its president.

Jean-Baptiste is a registered Democrat.
