Biography

Linda M. Gardner (Ret.) was a judge for the Second Judicial District Court in Washoe County, Nevada. She joined the Court in 2009 and retired from the bench in 2014. After retiring, Garder continued to preside as a senior judge.

She received a B.A. in political science from the University of Nevada, Reno in 1979. She went on to earn a J.D. from the University of California, Davis, King Hall School of Law in 1984.

Gardner began her legal career as a law clerk to the Hon. Peter I. Breen with the Second Judicial District Court in 1984.

In 1987, she joined the Washoe County District Attorney’s Office, where she worked as a deputy district attorney assigned to its Civil Division. Gardner also served as a supervising deputy district attorney of the Family Support Division (1991 to 1994), where she was tasked with prosecuting juveniles involved in criminal proceedings as well as representing the Division of Mental Health in court proceedings. Her tenure there also included an assignment in the Domestic Violence Unit (1997 to 1999).

Gardner briefly left the public sector for a stint in private practice. She practiced domestic relations, commercial litigation, and bankruptcy during that time. She returned to the District Attorney’s Office in 2001, this time holding an assignment in the Child Protective Services Unit, where she represented the Department of Social Services in hearings involving child abuse and neglect as well as evidentiary hearings and parental rights termination trials and appeals. She remained in that position until 2003.

It was at that time, Gardner began serving as a court master of the Family Court for the Second Judicial District Court. She was serving in that capacity at the time of her election to the bench.

She held memberships with the State Bar of Nevada, the Washoe County Bar Association, the Northern Nevada Women Lawyers, and the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges.

Gardner also served as an honorary board member of the Nevada Humane Society. As such, she assisted in legislation that allowed animal abuse to be a point of consideration for the issuance of a domestic violence protective order.

In addition to presiding as a senior judge after her retirement, Gardner also served as a mediator for the Washoe County Department of Social Services.
