Judge Leonard Hanser - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Leonard Hanser (Ret.) served as a judge for the Palm Beach County Court in Florida. Hanser was appointed to the bench by former Governor Charlie Crist on December 1, 2009, filling a vacancy created by the elevation of the Hon. Joseph Marx to the Palm Beach County Circuit Court. He retired on February 28, 2022.

Prior to his appointment, Hanser was a general magistrate for the Palm Beach County Court, a position to which he was named in 1993. Before that, he spent time as a sole practitioner in his own private practice (1989 to 1993).

Hanser earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Florida in 1974. He then completed a J.D. at the University of Virginia School of Law in 1977.

After graduating from law school, Hanser entered into private practice, specializing in real estate and bankruptcy litigation. He started as an associate at Levy, Pilsco, Perry, Shapiro, Keen & Kingcade. He worked in that capacity until 1978, at which time he entered into private practice as a sole practitioner. Then, in 1982, Hanser became a partner at Mitchell, Hanser, Schwartz & Winkler.

His memberships have included the Palm Beach County Chapter of the American Inns of Court.

Born and raised in Florida, Hanser attended high school in West Palm Beach. His family has lived in the State of Florida for multiple generations, his grandfather having operated a clothing store on Flagler Street in Miami in the 1920s. When not presiding over legal proceedings, Hanser enjoys reading non-fiction, running, playing classical piano, and traveling.
