Biography

Hon. Kirk C. Wintermute is a judge for the 18th Judicial District Circuit Court of Oregon in Clatsop County. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Kate Brown in 2022, filling the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Cindee S. Matyas (Ret.).

Prior to his appointment, he was a partner at Kaino & Wintermute in Astoria (2017 to 2022), where he handled criminal defense. He also served as an attorney and advocate for defendants in the Mental Health Treatment Court and was a judge pro tem for the City of Astoria Municipal Court (2014 to 2022). In addition, Wintermute was an adjunct instructor at Clatsop Community College.

He received a B.S. in history and political science from the University of Oregon in 2005. Wintermute then worked as a legal department contractor for Washington Mutual (2007) and a warehouse coordinator at Vulcan, Inc. (2007 to 2009) before completing a J.D. at the University of Oregon School of Law in 2013. He was a member of the Order of the Coif.

While a law student, Wintermute served as a legal assistant at the Law Office of James C. Niedermeyer (2010); a judicial extern for the Lane County Circuit Court (2012); a criminal defense clinic student at the Public Defender’s Services of Lane County, Inc. (2012 to 2013); and a volunteer and clinic student at Lane County Legal Aid (2011 to 2013).

He held a membership with the Oregon Criminal Defense Lawyers Association and was board president of the National Alliance on Mental Health Clatsop County and LiFEBoat Services.
