Judge Kevin G. Hessler: Professional Background and Legal Expertise

The Hon. Kevin G. Hessler is an associate judge for the Montgomery County Circuit Court in Maryland. He was appointed to the bench by Governor Larry Hogan on July 25, 2017.

Prior to his appointment, Hessler worked as an attorney in private practice, specializing in family law matters with complex financial aspects and high-conflict custody issues. He started as an associate at Miller & Steinberg (1982 to 1990) before becoming a partner at Miller, Steinberg & Hessler (1990 to 1999). He then joined Dragga, Callahan, Hannon & Hessler (renamed Dragga, Hannon, Hessler & Wills), where he worked until his appointment to the bench.

Hessler earned a bachelor’s degree in economics and English from Bucknell University in 1978. He then completed a J.D. at the University of Baltimore School of Law in 1981. As a law student, Hessler was a legislative aide for Howard Baker of the United States Senate.

After graduating from law school, Hessler began his legal career as a law clerk to the Hon. John J. Mitchell of the Montgomery County Circuit Court (1981 to 1982) and the Hon. John P. Moore of the Maryland Court of Appeals (1982).

His memberships have included the Maryland State Bar Association, the Montgomery County Bar Association, and the Maryland Chapter of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers. He also sat on the Montgomery County Commission for Women and the Select Committee on Gender Equality.
