Biography

Overview

The Hon. Kevin C. Brazile is a judge for the Los Angeles County Superior Court in California[1]. Brazile was appointed to the bench by former Governor Gray Davis in December 2002[1].

While on the bench, Brazile's assignments have included unlimited civil trials at the Stanley Mosk Courthouse[1]. He also served as site judge at the West Covina Courthouse and as supervising judge of the downtown civil departments. His colleagues later elected him assistant presiding judge for 2017 to 2018 and presiding judge for 2019 to 2020[2]. During his term as presiding judge, he became the first African American to lead the court and oversaw the court's early operational response to the COVID-19 pandemic[2][3].

Educational background

Brazile earned a B.A. in political science, cum laude, from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), in 1980[3]. At UCLA School of Law, he completed a J.D. in 1983[3]. Before transferring to UCLA, he attended West Los Angeles Junior College[3]. During college and law school, he worked as a clothing salesman, gardener, and mover to support himself[3]. He was admitted to the State Bar of California (June 1984).

Career history

After law school, Brazile joined the Los Angeles County Counsel's Office in 1984 as a civil trial attorney[4]. His practice there included personal injury, employment discrimination, dangerous conditions of public property, sexual assault, police misconduct, and federal civil rights matters[4]. Over the next 18 years, he advanced through posts that included deputy county counsel, division chief, and assistant county counsel in the General Litigation Division[4]. During his tenure as division chief, he became the first African American to hold that position[4].

In that work, Brazile argued matters before the U.S. Supreme Court, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, the California Courts of Appeal, and state and federal trial courts[4]. He also secured a unanimous favorable judgment before the U.S. Supreme Court[4].

Brazile served on the board of the California Judges Association. He also served on the board of the California Judges Association Foundation and in other leadership roles within the California Judges Association[4]. His broader professional service included a voting term on the Judicial Council of California beginning in September 2020 and an earlier term from September 2017 to September 2018[4]. He also served as co-chair of the Judicial Council's Advisory Committee on Providing Access and Fairness and as a member of the Judicial Council's Civil and Small Claims Advisory Committee[4]. In 1994, he received the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Civil Attorney of the Year Award. The UCLA Alumni Association later presented him with its Award for Public Service in 2020[3].

Personal life

Born in 1957 at the Queen of Angels Hospital in Echo Park, Los Angeles, Brazile grew up in Inglewood before moving to Culver City[3]. He was the first in his family to attend college and later the first in his family to graduate from college and law school[3]. Stories told by a friend's father influenced his decision to pursue law[3]. Outside the courtroom, Brazile and his wife, Nitra Brazile, a former school administrator, have raised one son[4].
