Judge Kenneth English - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Kenneth English is a commissioner for the Sonoma County Superior Court in California. He was appointed to the bench in 2020.

Prior to his appointment, English served as a supervising research attorney for the Sonoma County Superior Court since 2011. In that role, he studied complicated legal issues, new laws, and court opinions in order to help judges make well-reasoned decisions in civil and criminal cases. English is recognized as a subject matter expert in the area of Pretrial release and Pre-Arraignment release and acts as a speaker for the State of California on related topics throughout the state.

English earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Duquesne University. He then completed a J.D. from The George Washington University Law School.

After graduating from law school, English began his legal career as a law clerk for the Hon. Alan B. Johnson of the United States District Court for the District of Wyoming. He then entered into private practice, specializing in wine law, civil litigation, and criminal defense matters in Napa.

His memberships have included the Judicial Council of California, where he sat on the Civil Law Curriculum Committee, the Limited Civil PAO Workgroup, and the Trial Court Attorney Institute Workgroup.

English was born in Germany, where his father was stationed in the United States Air Force. Before pursuing his legal career, he attended the California Culinary Academy and later worked for several years as a chef. English and his wife, Ramona, have two children. When not presiding over legal matters, he enjoys local parks and spending time outdoors. English is a University of California Certified Naturalist and Climate Steward.

He was a resident of Penngrove at the time of his appointment.
