Judge Kelly L. McLaughlin: Professional Background and Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Kelly L. McLaughlin is a judge for the General Division of the Summit County Court of Common Pleas in Ohio. She initially joined the bench on December 17, 2018.

Prior to her election, McLaughlin was Chief Magistrate for the Domestic Relations Division of the Summit County Court of Common Pleas, a position she held since 2017. Before that, she was a magistrate (2010 to 2017) and a judicial attorney (2010 to 2013) for the Court of Common Pleas.

McLaughlin earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from The Ohio State University in 1984. She then completed a J.D. at The Ohio State University, Michael E. Moritz College of Law in 1987.

After graduating from law school, McLaughlin entered into private practice, handling personal injury, bankruptcy, consumer law, workers compensation, corporate law, and criminal law matters. She started as an associate at Tramonte, Kot, Davis and Lowry before becoming a partner at Davidson, Bonetti, Dunseath and McLaughlin in 1996.

Her memberships have included Akron Summit Community Action, the American Legion Auxiliary, the Child and Family Leadership Exchange, the YMCA, the NAACP, the League of Women Voters, and the Federated Democratic Women of Summit County.

While currently a resident of Akron, Ohio, McLaughlin graduated from Mogadore High School in 1980. She attends St. John’s Episcopal Church.

She is registered as a Democrat.
