Judge Kathleen M. Drakulich: Professional Background and Legal Expertise

Biography

Hon. Kathleen M. Drakulich is a judge for the Second Judicial District Court in Washoe County, Nevada. She was appointed to the bench by former Governor Brian Sandoval in 2017. She filled the vacancy created by the retirement of Janet Barry (Ret.).

Drakulich received a B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley. She went on to earn a J.D. from the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law.

Drakulich clerked for the Hon. William N. Forman with the Second Judicial District Court in 1986.

After her clerkship, she worked as a prosecutor for the Washoe County District Attorney’s Office. During her tenure there, Drakulich prosecuted major felonies including white-collar crimes, sexual assaults, narcotics, and murder cases.

Upon leaving the public sector, she joined the law firm of Anderson, Pearl, Hardesty, Lyle & Murphy, where she practiced civil litigation as an associate.

Following her practice there, Drakulich became assistant general counsel at Sierra Pacific Power Company and Nevada Power Company. As such, she litigated energy and natural resource cases.

Prior to her appointment to the bench, Drakulich was practicing at McDonald Carano, where her practice focused on issues pertaining to energy, health care, manufacturing, resource planning, and information technology.

She has served as a volunteer with Washoe County Zero Tolerance drug program and participated in the “Adopt-a-Family” Christmas program for Nevada Women Lawyers and the Boys & Girls Club of Truckee Meadows.

Her memberships have included serving as a board member for the Nevada Trial Lawyers, Renown Health, and former Governor Brian Sandoval’s Board of Economic Development. Drakulich was chairman of the board for Renown’s South Meadows Facility and chairman of the board of the Clean Energy Project. She also served as a member of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s Blue-Ribbon Panel on Renewable Energy.
