Judge Karl R. Hanson - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

Hon. Karl R. Hanson is a judge for the Rock County Circuit Court in the Fifth Judicial District of Wisconsin. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Scott Walker in 2018, filling the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. James Daley (Ret.).

Prior to his appointment, Hanson presided as a municipal judge for the Towns of Milton, Harmony, and Lima joint multijurisdictional court (2017 to 2018). During that same time, he served as an assistant attorney general with the Wisconsin Department of Justice (2017 to 2018). Before that, Hanson was an attorney with the Wisconsin Employment Relations Commission (2015 to 2017), the Office of State Employment Relations (2014 to 2015), and Nowlan & Mouat LLP (2010 to 2014).

He also spent eight years as a volunteer ombudsman and mediator for the Employer Support of the Guard & Reserve (2010 to 2018), during which time he mediated employer/employee disputes under the Uniform Servicemembers Employment and Reemployment Rights Act.

Hanson received a B.S. in history from the United States Military Academy at West Point (2000) and an M.P.A. from Western Kentucky University (2004). He went on to complete a J.D. at the University of Wisconsin Law School in 2008.

Hanson was admitted to practice in Wisconsin (2009) and the United States District Court for the Western District of Wisconsin (2009).

His memberships have included the Rock County Bar Association (treasurer) and the James Doyle American Inns of Court.

Hanson served as an officer in the United States Army and Wisconsin Army National Guard (2000 to 2010). He was a platoon leader in Bosnia and served as a troop commanding officer during his second tour in Iraq. Hanson was also a staff officer in the Iraqi Prime Minister’s Situation Room. He holds the rank of Captain.

Hanson attended Oregon High School in Oregon, Wisconsin.
