Judge Justin M. Hansen - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Justin M. Hansen is a circuit judge for the 22nd Judicial Circuit Court of Illinois. He was appointed to the bench by the Illinois Supreme Court in 2019, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Michael Sullivan.

Prior to his appointment, Hansen was an attorney at Swanson, Martin & Bell, a law firm he joined in 2014. His practice involved defending physicians, nurses, and hospitals in medical negligence claims. Before that, he spent one year as a special public defender for the McHenry County Public Defender’s Office (2013 to 2014).

Hansen earned a bachelor’s degree in history, economics, and public policy from Augustana College in 2004. He spent the next few years working as a children’s advocate for the Milwaukee County Task Force on Family Violence before completing a J.D. at DePaul University College of Law in 2009. As a law student, he clerked for the Cook County Public Guardian (2007), the Law Offices of Robert J. Wagner (2007 to 2009), and the McHenry County State’s Attorney (2009).

After graduating from law school, Hansen entered into private practice. He started as an attorney at Cowlin, Curran & Coppedge, prosecuting traffic and DUI cases for the firm’s municipal clients. He also represented private clients with civil and criminal litigation matters.

His memberships have included the McHenry County Bar Association. He also sat on the In-Schools Program Committee, the Community Engagement Committee, and the Public Affairs Committee of the Illinois Judges Association, and he has been involved with the Board of Directors for Senior Care Volunteer Network and Big Brothers Big Sisters of McHenry County.

He is a recipient of the Civics Education Award from the Illinois State Bar Association.

Hansen and his wife, Cheryl, reside in Crystal Lake. They attend St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church.
