Biography

The Hon. Juliet J. McKenna is an associate judge for the Superior Court of the District of Columbia. McKenna was nominated to the bench by former President George W. Bush on February 14, 2005, filling a vacancy created by the resignation of the Hon. Nan R. Shuker. She was confirmed by the United States Senate on October 7, 2005.

McKenna has held assignments in the Family Court, presiding over cases on the Juvenile, Domestic Relations, and Adoptions Calendars. She has also served in the Criminal Division, where she has sat as its deputy presiding judge (2018 to 2019) and presiding judge (2020 to 2021), and the Civil Division.

Prior to her appointment, McKenna was a magistrate for the Superior Court of the District of Columbia, a position to which she was named in 2002. Before that, she spent time as the program director and the national executive director for Lawyers for Children America (1998 to 2002).

McKenna earned a bachelor’s degree from Georgetown University in 1992. She then completed a J.D. at Yale Law School in 1995.

After graduating from law school, McKenna entered into private practice, working as an attorney at Crowell & Moring. She remained with the firm until 1996, at which time she was hired by the District of Columbia Office of Corporation Counsel, where she prosecuted child abuse and neglect matters.

Her memberships have included the Superior Court of the District of Columbia’s Family Court Implementation Committee, Family Court Panels Committee, and Advisory Rules and Practice Standards Committee. She has also been involved with the District of Columbia Sentencing Commission.

She is a recipient of the Unsung Hero of the Law Award from the Bar Association of the District of Columbia (2001).

Born in Valparaiso, Indiana, McKenna was raised in Connecticut.
